In the fields of seismology and applied geophysics, the major teaching and research facilities include: the earthquake monitoring network of the Chiayi-Tainan area, the strong-motion monitoring network of the Chiayi-Tainan area, a multi-channel seismic exploration system, a seismic information and data processing system, a geographical information system, a ground penetrating radar system, a global positioning system, various low-to-high frequency mechanical-driven seismic sources, a magnetotelluric system, an electric resistivity measurement system, magnetometers, and a 15-passenger van for field trips. The state-of-the-art high speed computer system we own can handle highly complicated theoretical and numerical computation and modeling works. Three new laboratories, including a physical acoustics lab, a physical modeling lab, and a site-efTect research lab, are all capable of doing computer aided measuring and data-collecting works. Currently, we are integrating various telecommunication hardware as well as software systems to step into to the era of multimedia-and-distant learning.

For environmental science studies, we established an environmental molecular biology lab and a marine biogeochemistry lab in the year of 2004. Recently, we have recruited new faculty members of excellent caliber to enhance the teaching as well as the research strength in environmental analytical chemistry, ecological engineering, and bioenergy.
